No Naxal activity in Telangana, says Anurag Sharma

Hyderabad: There is no Maoist activity in Telangana at present, but the ultras are try ing to enter the state from the neighbouring states, state director general of police Anurag Sharma said on Monday.

“In our state, there is no Maoist activity at present...but they are attempting and we are aware of that. Our police forces are prepared to tackle them and prevent them from entering our state from bordering Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra,” he said.

“The LWE (left wing extremism) activities in the state are under check. During the year, four extremist violence were reported. Five cases were reported in 2013. After formation of Telangana, only one such incident was reported,” Mr Sharma said.

“After bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, the Greyhounds were divided and whatever we got, they are good enough. We are also training the district special parties to tackle the Maoists,” he added.

Referring to the incident of last night in Khammam, where the Maoists fired at a police party, the DGP said, “Khammam district police got a tip-off that Maoists were likely to attack Satyanarayanapuram cell tower and the SP directed a special police team to go and check if any such move was there.

“The police found 10-15 extremists with 20-30 militia members trying to attack the tower by setting it on fire with petrol. The Maoists fired on the police personnel, who retaliated. Then the ultras fled leaving behind three weapons,” Mr Sharma added.
