Mysuru on high alert after terror attack

Mysuru: The terror attack in Bengaluru has set off alarm bells in Mysuru where tourists have been arriving in droves for the New year and Christmas season. The police is on high alert to make sure that the festive mood is not interrupted.

The city’s tourist inflow which is usually 5000 on week days and over 10,000 on the weekends and general holidays, has crossed 20,000 during the last week of December, with many arriving for the “December to Remember” festival launched for the first time this year.

With large crowds thronging the city, the police is keen to ensure there is no cause for worry. DCP Rajanna says although there have been no threat calls or threat perceptions related to terror attacks in Mysuru, the police is on high alert in view of the terror attack in Bengaluru.

“Two bomb disposal squads have thoroughly checked all the tourist spots and bus and railway stations in the city. Tourists are being scanned through door frame metal detectors at important destinations like Chamundi Hills, the zoo and Mysuru palace.

And Garuda and PCR vehicles are on the lookout for any unattended baggage that may be lying around. We also have a 50 strong commando force and 200 men trained for the Karnataka State Industry Security Force for use in emergencies,” he added.

Meanwhile, Monday evening saw the 34- member Keriyak rock band of Sweden hit the floor in a mega carnival that wound its way through the streets, mesmerising tourists and Myureans.

Led by the Mysuru Police Band, the carnival had people dressed as Santa clause, Donald ducks, Mickey mouse and other cartoon characters greeting children lining the roads.

Starting from the Mysuru Palace, the carnival went past the Palace North Gate, Chamaraja Circle, KR Circle, Devraj Urs road, Deputy Commissioner’s office before culminating at the Oval Ground.
