Hyderabad storm moved from outskirts

Hyderabad: Though no thunderstorm was predicted for the city on Wednesday, Hyderabad received a bout of rain and strong winds due to cumulonimbus clouds forming on the outskirts.

As per the Met department, a few parts of the city received winds with speeds of over 100 km per hour. The maximum time limit for a storm from a mature cumulonimbus cloud is 30-45 minutes. These clouds take two-three hours to take shape. On Wednesday, these clouds formed on the city’s outskirts but migrated inwards towards the evening, resulting in a storm between 5 and 5.30 pm.

Hyderabad assistant meteorologist N. Narsimha Rao said, “Cloud formation is a continuous process, one cloud may burst while another may form based on convectional factors (heat, moisture, wind); there is no scope to count them. The radius of a mature cloud is 1-5 km, which mean the effects will be seen 5 km around the cloud. The maturity of a cloud also increases the wind speed, which means if the storm’s effect is intense, this will increase the wind speed too.”

For Friday, the IMD has identified cloud patches 50 km from the city and has announced the possibility of rain and thunderstorm. The total rainfall recorded on Wednesday was 10.6 mm. Hyderabad recorded a maximum temperature of 40.1ºC.

The forecast from Friday to Monday is partly cloudy skies in the morning hours becoming generally cloudy towards the evenings with possibility of rain or thundershowers accompanied by squalls or hail.
