Andhra Pradesh chances look dim

Hyderabad: The chances of the AP government succeeding in holding common CETs look remote going by the outcome of Inter exams. The AP government tried in vain for common Inter exams in March 2015 but was forced to agree to separate exams after TS refused it.

Meetings were held at the level of education ministers and officials and at one stage even the Governor intervened by holding meetings with ministers to settle the Inter exams issue, but the end result was that AP was forced to allow TS to hold separate exams.

The AP Reorganisation Act, 2014 has provision for common admissions and quotas for 10 years, but each state has been interpreting it according to their convenience.

The responsibility is now with the Centre to give clarity on whether common exams are part of common admissions or not and if yes, the Act has to be amended suitably in Parliament.

The Centre has already started talking about amending the Act saying that some provisions were ‘flawed’ as they were made hastily by the UPA government.

Another problem is that, Eamcet has 25 per cent weightage for Inter marks and how it can be given for separate exams and what if any legal problems arise in future.

Though officials are suggesting 'normalisation formula' as a solution for this, it is more said than done going by the strained relations between both the states and each one doubting the ranks and marks awarded to students.
