Gannavaram highway turns into a deathtrap

Vijayawada: The Gannavaram highway has turned into a deathtrap what with one accident occurring every alternate day. In the lat 15 days, 6 people were killed and a majority of the accidents involve bikes being hit by lorries with those on the two-wheelers falling victims. Accidents without any casualties are also huge in number. From Oct. 25 till date, seven accidents occurred. Six people died in four of the accidents. In the other three accidents, the victims were injured.

On Tuesday, Durgaprasad of Srikakulam, riding on a bike, was hit by a lorry and hed died on spot. On Oct. 25, a family travelling on a bike hit a stationary lorry on the same road in which a man and his daughter, Vamsikrishna and Vasishta, died on the spot while his wife, Sowjanya, suffered serious injuries and is still bed-ridden, undergoing treatment. On Nov. 1, Yadagiri and Rajesh died after the bike on which they were travelling was hit by a lorry. They were studying in Loyola College. On Nov. 3, one more biker, Nagaraju, died after being hit by a lorry. On Nov. 4, a medical student, Abhimanyu, belonging to Visakhapatnam, met with an accident and his two-wheeler, Bullet, was up in flames.

Abhimanyu safely escpaed with a few injuries. The villagers from Ramavarappadu to Gannavaram said that the road expansion works were leading to many accidents. The road is being expanded and a bay is still being built. Motorists are getting confused while driving and overtaking other vehicles. at times crashing into other vehicles parked in the bay, the works of which are yet to be complete. There are suggestions that the road contractor, should take precautionary measures like providing danger sign boards and dividing marks.
