Telangana: Traffic violations startle cops

Hyderabad: Two city vehicle owners may lose their driving licences as they were caught nine times and lost nine points five months after implementation of the new penalty point system. A.V. Ranganath, Hyderabad traffic DCP, said, “We are surprised that even after strict enforcement and repeated counselling sessions violators have not changed. Instead they are repeatedly violating the traffic norms. It has been only five months since we implemented the penalty point system but people have already reached 12 points which quite surprising to us.”

Eleven city drivers lost 8 points and 29 people lost seven points. Nearly 2, 59,195 people fall under the repeated violators’ category, said senior traffic officials. The traffic police counselled the violators who crossed more than five penalty points since August. If 12 points are crossed in two years, the driving licence is cancelled and if the motorist clocks 12 points a second time, the licence is suspended for two years. For the third time, the licence is suspended for three years.

Vinod Kumar Kanumala, founder of the Indian Federation of Road Safety, said, ”Proper enforcement is the key. Repeated violators are the biggest challenge for the police as most of them are young students driving two-wheelers. Still, many people are not aware of the penalty point system.”
