Won’t turn friends into foes: Kamal Haasan

CHENNAI: Actor Kamal Haasan on Thursday said he was not willing to turn his friends into enemies and indulge in”blame game politics” that is the order of current day politics, a comment being interpreted as the star’s willingness to work with his friend superstar Rajinikanth, who has also announced his political plunge.

In his weekly column in Tamil magazine ‘Ananda Vikatan’, Kamal said his delay in launching his ‘Maiamwhistle’ App and his political outfit was not due to fear but due to devotion. The star, who announced his political plunge on his 63rd birthday on November 7 last year, said his application was being beta tested and would be launched very soon since he wants it to get running from day one without any glitches.

In his column, Kamal dwelled again on the “money power” in R K Nagar by-elections and said there is no need for an individual or an individual party to get angered by my comments on the issue.

“Instead, everyone has to feel angered by this situation. You can direct that anger at me if required. I have no qualms. But someone has to keep reminding everyone of it, is it not? Where will complacency lead us?” he asked. In his last column, Kamal had accused independent candidate T T V Dhinakaran of “buying” his victory in R K Nagar and said getting money for votes was “akin to begging from a thief.”

Kamal’s response came after Dhinakaran accused him of “insulting” the R K Nagar electorate and a complaint was also filed against the actor for his comments. Having already made it clear that his political journey was very much on the cards, Kamal said on Thursday that his politics will be aimed at growth and development.

“But in this journey, I'm not willing to turn my friends into enemies, make that enmity bigger, advertise it, turn it into a business. Such behavior has become the order of the day. Moreover, people and youth will not accept such politics,” Kamal said. Political observers said Kamal’s statement points at a possible cooperation between him and Rajinikanth as they both take baby steps in politics.

By saying publicly that he was willing to convert his friends into enemies, Kamal has waved a white flag at Rajinikanth, they said.

Rajinikanth had on December 31 announced that he would launch a political party that would contest all 234 constituencies in the next elections.
