Can Cure exhibition busts multiple myths on cancer

Kozhikode: ‘Can Cure 2018’, a cancer awareness exhibition is on at the Regional Science Centre and Planetarium initiated by the MVR Cancer Centre and Research Institute along with Pratheeksha, an organization catering to cancer patients. The focus of the exhibition is the spread of fake cancer healers who exploit the superstitious beliefs of patients and their kith and kin. “There are many misunderstandings and notions in the minds of common people on cancer”, said Sanjeevan Parambath, a Pratheeksha representative.

“Many of the orthodox people depend on some quick healing country medicines propagated as a panacea for cancer while many others go for black magic”, he said. Pratheeksha is hosting many awareness camps and seminars in various districts of the state in order to eliminate misunderstandings. Many persons do not chooseg scientific treatment procedures to fight cancer, as they are very expensive, it was pointed out.

MVR Cancer Centre and Research Institute in collaboration with the Calicut City Service Co-operative Bank is thus coming up with a fixed deposit scheme of Rs 10,000 which will enable people to have free cancer treatment service for up to Rs 5 lakhs. The exhibition had huge screens describing what cancer is, types of cancer, its causes, how it can be diagnosed early, its prevention, lifestyle and cancer, its symptoms, its treatment procedures and what should be done after you are detected with cancer.
