Governor's rule imposed in Jammu and Kashmir

New Delhi/Srinagar: Governor’s Rule imposed in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday after political parties failed to reach an agreement to form government. Outgoing CM Omar Abdullah met Governor N.N. Vohra on Thursday and told him he does not want to continue as a caretaker CM, and stressed the state needed a full-time administrator.

Sources said that till an elected government could be put in place, and in the absence of a caretaker CM, the state administration could not be left in a vacuum. The Centre is, therefore, all set to accept Vohra’s recommendation that Governor’s Rule be imposed till the time a stable government is in office.

Governor N.N. Vohra on Thursday sent a report to the Centre after Abdullah sought to be relieved as caretaker CM. Though both the PDP and BJP are hopeful that the impasse will be over soon, the report is learnt to have given a few other suggestions, including Governor’s Rule, if no party manages to cobble up the required numbers.

Sounding confident that the impasse will be over soon, a senior BJP leader said “everything will be clear after January 14,” which is considered as the beginning of an auspicious phase.

Speculation is rife that if the PDP and the BJP agree on a coalition government, the former could get the Chief Ministerial post while the BJP will have to settle for the deputy chief ministership. The new government must be installed before January 19, when the term of the outgoing Assembly expires.
