Animal waste still dumped

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Pollution Control Board is dithering even weeks after the deadline given to the Chengicherla slaughterhouse for illegally dumping over 30 tonnes of animal waste in Jawaharnagar dump yard have passed.

Even two weeks after the deadline, the slaughterhouse continues to dump waste in the yard, leading to the nauseous smell spreading beyond 8 km. “We are taking permanent action to deal with the issue.

The plant for treating animal waste is under trial and will take another 10 days or more. We (a team of engineers and officials) visited the place on Saturday. Currently, the animal waste is being dumped at the Jawaharnagar dump yard,” said Anil Kumar, member secretary TSPCB.

However P. Venkateshwar Reddy, chief veterinary officer of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, said that the rendering plant would take three months to become fully operational.

“The slaughterhouse at Chengicherla doesn’t have a treatment plant but the rendering plant is under trial and would take three months to be completely operational,” Mr Reddy said.

Meanwhile, over one lakh residents of different colonies around the Jawaharnagar dump yard are suffering and are demanding that the slaughterhouse be closed till the treatment plant is fully operational.

K. Ravinder, a resident of Jawaharnagar area said, “The intensity of the smell is worsening. Is it important to allow the slaughterhouse to run for the sake of meat at the cost of our health?” he asked.
