Now Andhra cops conduct under watch

Hyderabad: AP director general of police J. V. Ramudu has ordered police stations to set up cameras to ensure that there is no custodial violence in the lock ups and to see that the cops behave well with the complainants. Instead of body cameras used in Telangana State, AP cops are to have surveillance in police stations.

Mr Ramudu said, “On pilot project basis, we are going to start this project in certain police stations in AP.

This has already been implemented in several advanced nations like Great Britain and Israel. If a police officer misbehaves with the complainant, it will be caught on the camera.

At the same time, it also helps the cops to fend off the false allegations of custodial violence. The camera will be set up in four to five spots in police station like reception and lock up.”

A technical committee headed by an additional director-general is looking into the implementation of the project.

“In Great Britain all interrogations are videographed and all movements in police stations are on the video. So, there is less chance of false accusations. We are examining various technologies to improve policing.”

The AP cops are also working on an App for women to send SOS directly to the control room. Mr Ramudu said, “On pilot project basis, we worked on three mobile applications, out of which one is 70 percent successful.

Our technical committee is working on experimental basis to make it 100 per cent successful. We are also asking experts to come out with the Apps. This is apart from the existing helplines to assist women in distress.”
