Mission Kochi turns mission impossible

KOCHI: Four months after the announcement of the Mission Kochi programme of the Kochi Corporation to take up projects on fast track, not even a single scheme has been implemented.

It was on August 25 that the Chief Minister announced Mission Kochi 15-08-15 to complete long delayed projects announced by the City Corporation over the years.

Now, with barely seven months remaining, there are doubts over completion of Mission schemes during the UDF council regime.

“If the current progress is any indication, only a couple of projects can be completed. Though the civic administration has prioritized 33 projects, lack of funding and procedural delay would hit timely completion,” said a civic official.

Since, the civic body has included projects for which funds are yet to be identified, Mission Kochi is unlikely to be a complete success, it has been observed. Getting sanction from agencies concerned, identifying funds are the major challenges for the civic body in taking up projects on the fast-track mode.

“Some of the prestigious schemes including renovation of the Ernakulam town hall, Subhash Bose Park and Pachalam crematorium that can be completed as funds have already been allocated under People’s Plan projects and works are in progress.

Regular review meetings to assess the progress of projects are being held and work files are being handled on a fast track mode,” said Soumini Jain, works committee chairperson.

However, except the NH 47 beautification from Vyttila to Edappally and the renovation works of town hall, the city residents are not seeing any other ongoing projects as part of Mission Kochi.

The corporation also could take forward some other projects like Solar City, drafting water policy for the city and city mobility plan, though with the support of external agencies.
