Above 30? Get Pap Smear test done

BENGALURU: If you are a woman above 30 years, it is important to begin getting regular pelvic examinations done to take charge of your health. An important part of this pelvic exam may include a test, called a Pap Smear, to detect the often life-threatening disease, cervical cancer, even before it sets in.

“The Pap Smear test is the best ways for early detection of cervical cancer. A swab of the cervix is taken which can reveal abnormal cells, sometimes even before the cancer appears,” says Dr Sheela Mane, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Anugraha Nursing Home. “After a woman crosses 30, we recommend a pap test once every three years. If the test reveals abnormal cells that are precancerous, the doctor can remove them to prevent cancer.”

But sadly, not many women come forward and also doctors do not suggest the pap smear test. “Primary healthcare providers should explore opportunities to discuss sexual health with their women patients and screen them for sexually transmitted infections as well,” says Dr Kamini Rao, Medical Director, Milan Fertility Centre.

Dr Sheela said, “During the pap smear, the doctor may choose to collect samples of the fluid around the cervix to test for Gonorrhea or Chlamydia.” However, if the doctor advises the test, it should not be a cause for worry. “Cervical screening isn’t a test for cancer; but a test to check the health of the cells of the cervix. Most women’s test results return normal, while only one in 20 women shows abnormality,” says Dr Sheela.
