Hyderabad: Among the five patients who had developed eye infections after undergoing cataract operations, three are showing positive response following treatment and doctors at the Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital are hopeful that their sight will be restored.

However, the condition of the other two patients are not encouraging, doctors said on Monday. There were more than 500 patients at the out-patient department on Monday but doctors said that elective cataract surgeries still can’t be performed on them.

Dr Rajender Gupta, deputy superintendent of the hospital, said, “We can’t operate as the microbiology report and two other reports are pending. We have to wait for the next four days to ensure that there is no Klebsilla bacteria in any of the equipment or anywhere in the theatre.”

Doctors are hopeful that elective surgeries will be started from Friday at the hospital. Patients coming to SD Hospital are being sent to the eye-units at Osmania General Hospital and Gandhi Hospital.
