A Mealieu of fit bites

We have all heard the phrase, “You are what you eat,” and that one cannot get a balanced diet without a nutritious meal. But, these days no one has the time or energy to make a healthy nutritious meal. So, instead we cheat on meals, and eat junk or oily food that isn’t hard to find. Yet, in a new trend that is seeing many fitness buffs get smart, healthy meal kits are being fashioned and customised by a few city entrepreneurs who have dedicated themselves to helping everyone get their portion of health and nutrition at home.

Twenty-five-year-old, Esha Hegde from Bengaluru, who started her healthy food kits company Fitdish, claims to be one of the first in the city to serve healthy hot meals delivered right at your doorstep. She shares, “I was quite a chubby kid when I was little, so body image played a very important role in my life. I loved cooking and initially I started eating healthy, and cooked for my friends and family.

They liked what I cooked, and asked me to supply meals on a weekly basis. It spread by word of mouth and now I get orders for around 200 meals per day. The best part about the health kits is that it can be customised to your needs, whether you are on a weight loss journey or trying to get abs.”

Eating healthy, alone can be difficult but it’s easier to have someone to keep you accountable for your diet. This couple started eating healthy and it eventually turned into a business idea. Pavaana B. Kumar and Praveen Gatti are co-founders of Fit Deli that serves appetising meals to people in the city. Pavanna tells us, “I was a biomedical engineer before and Praveen was a businessman who was very enthusiastic about fitness and food. He would always weigh his ingredients before making them and always pack lunch to work, never wanting to eat an unhealthy meal. That was one of the reasons we started this. So, that people could eat healthy and live better.”

The couple also caters to the needs of people with medical problems, like high cholesterol or high BP, who might not be able to eat whatever they want, so we take care of specific diets and meals.

Got a sweet tooth, but don’t want to gain those extra pound? That’s exactly what Trishala Ashok had in mind when she started baking cookies and cupcakes that have no preservatives, no maida and are made of oats and honey. Trishala elaborates, “The best thing about these baked goods is that people don’t use them as their cheat meals but instead include them as a part of their diet meals. I also do healthy birthday cakes.”

A certified sports nutritionist and fitness expert, Arunava Bhattacharyya uses these health kits on a regular basis says, “For people who don’t have control over their food, the healthiest thing you could get in the market is a Subway sandwich which is also not worth the money you pay in terms of its quantity. But, these food kits are sized according to your needs, the food never gets monotonous and this ensures that a person will be more consistent in their diet as well.”
