A graduate of Telugu University and a post-graduate of Central University, Shivaramachary is a prolific sculptor who believes in experimenting with a variety of materials as mediums. His works are based on concepts that evolve from personal experiences and his perception of the people around him. The winged figure that makes an appearance in several of his works, is an emblem that symbolises the amalgamation of real and fantastic in a single form.

One of his bronze and wood works is currently on display at the Kalakriti Art Gallery in a show titled Sands of Time. “The work, titled Terrain, unveils the undulating, shifting and forever-changing aspects of every terrain. Known spaces become unknown with time, as nothing is permanent. For example, the terrain of life is infused with different kinds of experiences — some rewarding and some stressful,” the artist says.




In this case, the winged figure stands victorious, encircled by rewards, opposite a section of terrain covered by a cluster of thorn-like obstacles.

Talking about the kind of work that has caught his attention at the moment, he says, “There is always an urge to discover a new form to enhance the visual dialogue. Recently, I spent some time at a meditation centre and was inspired to start a new series in wax. At present, I am moulding those pieces into metal. I am excited about exhibiting that series in the future.”

Shivaramachary’s secret to consistently producing exceptional pieces of art — he spends quite a bit of time with children. “I teach sculpture to intermediate students, and I frequently interact with young students through workshops. It is very refreshing to work with children and explore their unhindered imaginative capabilities. I feel energised and inspired after spending time with them,” he says.
