What’s common between Narendra Modi, Pawan Kalyan, Shah Rukh, Vijay and Mahesh Babu? They were most talked about Indian accounts on twitter over the past one year. People from across the world come to Twitter every day to have conversations and to find out and catch up on what’s happening in the world.

Twitter was a stage for any topic imaginable in the world this year and not just confined to celebrities. As per 2018’s Biggest Moments in India on Twitter released by the micro-blogging platform on Wednesday, Virat Kohli’s Tweet featuring a picture with Anushka Sharma on the occasion of Karvachauth was most liked tweet of 2018 with over 215,000 likes.

Indian’s were moved by Sunil Chhetri’s candid plea for supporting the Indian football team which emerged as the most retweeted tweet in India with 60k retweets. South Indian’s have been at their best this year. South Indian film #Sarkar led the rise of regional entertainment conversations on Twitter this year.

The cinema industry yet again is front runner when it comes to trends with #Sarkar,#Viswasam, #BharatAneNenu, #AravindhaSametha, #Rangasthalam, #Kaala and TV show #BiggBossTelugu2 clinching seven of the top 10 hashtags this year.

On the other hand, it is certainly a welcome change that #MeToo in India added to the top hashtag trends while Twitter reacted en masse as people demanded #JusticeForAsifa, engaged in ongoing political debates on #KarnatakaElection and #Aadhaar. #KeralaFloods brought together government agencies, relief organisations, famous personalities and regular people on the platform to help rebuild Kerala as they utilised Twitter to share information and crowd-source relief and assistance.

India celebrated sports stars like never before, especially #AsianGames and Indian athletes, including Bajrang Punia, Hima Das and P. V. Sindhu won laurels. India lived #DeepVeer’s romance especially from the launch of Padmaavat earlier this year to wedding bells in November, celebrity couple Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh continued to give people major relationship goals and became the talk of the town on Twitter in 2018.
