Musicians call it ‘the line’, the point of entry into a realm that transcends both thought and physical being. Amit Heri, acclaimed ‘indie jazz’ guitarist, composer and yogi whenever time permits, describes the experience as one that “engulfs” him. “It’s a voice from deep inside, that makes itself heard after a great deal of introspection,” said the 45-year-old, whose three decade-long career has seen him perform with the likes of Zakir Hussain, Trilok Gurtu, Angelique Kidjo and Louiz Banks.

Heri’s upcoming performance will take him back to a venue that holds a special place in his heart. “I was the first musician to play at BFlat and I’m very glad to be going back there,” he said, speaking to DC in his spacious, antique-themed living room. The gig comprises Ravi Kur on flute, Mohini Dey on bass and Ranjit Barot on drums – four musicians brought together by their thirst to create something new, something totally original. “I’ve played with Ravi for about 15 years and Ranjit for nearly 25. We have a strong on-stage relationship,” he said. “I have never played with Mohini, but I do know that what she lacks in age, she makes up for in passion!”

The evening, as is to be expected (what can one expect, really, with four jazz musicians up on stage), the evening will be a confluence of diverse elements and influences, “coming together for an intense performance,” as Heri puts it.”

The ensemble will perform several of Heri’s new compositions, along with a number of other songs. “Some of it is groovy and funky, some of it is bluesy, some of it is complex and some of it pretty! Expect a few surprises, though!”
