Pa Ranjith discusses politics with Rahul Gandhi

What’s brewing between Pa Ranjith of Kabali and Kaala fame and Congress party president Rahul Gandhi? The latter had gone to Delhi and met Rahul and spent an hour or so with him. Actor Kalaiyarasan, a close buddy of Ranjith, had accompanied the filmmaker.

Rajiv Gandhi took to Twitter to share the news saying he enjoyed discussing “politics, film and society” with the acclaimed filmmaker. Heaping laurels on Ranjith, he posted, “I met film director Pa. Ranjith, the man behind blockbuster films like Madras, Kabali and Kaala and actor Kalaiyarasan, in Delhi yesterday. We talked about politics, films and society. I enjoyed the interaction and look forward to continuing our dialogue.”

The posts went viral on online platforms and speculation of what would have transpired between them was running high. Ranjith was quoted saying that the Gandhi family did not have any objection to releasing Perarivalan, one of the convicts in the assassination of Rahul’s dad and former PM Rajiv Gandhi. Perarivalan has been in prison for more than 25 years.

Ranjith’s movies — Madras, Kabali and Kaala — invariably address Dailt issues, which is why Rahul may have paid special attention to the film maker and his social themed movies. Ranjith was quick to respond on his twitter thanking Rahul Gandhi for having him over and discussing politics and art.

Ranjith wrote, “IMP. Meeting with @RahulGandhi abt politics & art. Discussed caste & religious bias threatening d core of our secular constitution. Thanks for having me over Sir. Looking forward for our discussion taking shape. A national leader engaging with ppl from all ideologies is very encouraging!
