Victory for a small town girl

Coming from one of the coolest town in India — Shimla, the ‘nerdy girl’ (as she calls herself) aspired to be a part of the Miss India beauty pageant. Despite opposition from her family in the initial days, Asmita Sood ventured into modelling while she was in New Delhi to pursue her graduation.

The versatile actress realised her dream when she finally made it as one of the top finalists in the Miss India 2011 contest. Later, it was films in the South, and Asmita made her debut in Telugu and then in Kannada and Malayalam. Thereafter, she took the small screen route and for many who follow Hindi soaps, she was later known as Meher Purohit from the musical romantic TV show Phir Bhi Na Maane… Badtameez Dil and then the popular soap venture Dil Hi Toh Hai. The actress has a ‘victory’ connection in Sandalwood too. Asmita talks about her growing up in Shimla, her TV and filmy ventures apart from ‘wedding’ plans and more.

“My journey in both television and films has been great so far. The love and admiration the Kannada audience has showered upon me makes it more special. My first collaboration in Kannada for Victory along with the talented Sharan sir and Tharun Sudhir and the entire team was a successful one. I had the opportunity to learn the art as well. Further, a cameo in Adyaksha and now the sequel to Victory made me feel that I as if was back to my family again. The entire cast and crew has been supportive especially Sharan sir who is always funny but yet a bundle of talent,” says Asmita Sood.

The actress says that she never ever planned to take up acting as her career, but being part of the beauty pageant was her sole aim back then. “Most of my family members are well educated and wanted me to pursue an MBA and then take up CA. Despite opposition, I worked hard and got into modelling and though I couldn’t bag the title, I was one of the finalists in 2011. It led me to acting, which I had no clue about nor had the formal learning prior to it. I learnt the art while on the field. Eventually, television gave me the much needed recognition. The two TV shows has been a great learning experience which has also given me the stamina to work for long hours. This has equipped to take up more challenging roles in all forms, be it modelling, movies and television,” she adds.

She even reveals that she has signed a unique web-series project in Hindi, which will be launched in the coming days.

About her growing up in Shimla, Asmita goes on to add that unlike the present generation kids, we had a great time living close to nature’s beaty. “I was a studious girl with spectacles. I was a total nerd but when it comes to fun, we as kids would run into the jungle and climb the trees, pluck berries. This is one of the reason why I travel a lot. I just rush out of busy buzzing life away from Mumbai and travel to be close to nature,” she signs off.
