Swamiye Ayyapo sets Barca’s score

Kochi: Taking the Internet by storm, Malayalis have done it in the past and they are back at it again.

From teaching Maria Sharapova who Sachin Tendulkar is, to making #PoMoneModi a global trend, Keralites seem to have a special inclination toward trolling. Spanish football giants FC Barcelona were the latest to feel the heat of Mala-yali-sponsored troll att-ack. Barcelona’s 142-million-euros signing of Braz-ilian forward Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool FC is the talk of the football world and the La Liga giants were celebrating their latest capture with a series of tweets and Facebooks posts daily.

On Wednesday, one of Barcelona’s social media posts welcoming Coutinho featured an unusual background music – Swamiye Ayyappo, Ayyappo Swamiye. The vocal is unmistakably legible at the start of a 40-second video titled “New club, new pals for Philippe Coutinho!” and that was the cue for a Malayali-special virtual ambushing of Barcelona’s social media.

Soon, a host of funny replies flooded the comments section and the video also went viral as WhatsApp forwards.

“He is going to Sabarimala, since finally Lord Ayyappa heard his prayers and blessed him with a move away from Anfield (sic),” read a tweet.

One seemed to have deciphered the reason behind Barcelona ace Lionel Messi growing a beard. “It is now clear that Messi had grown the beard as a vow of his Sabarimala pilgrimage.”

Photo-comments featuring face of Ayyappa morphed into Coutinho’s body also poured into the comments column and a number of related trolls also popped up.

With the annual ‘Makara Vilaku’ festival at Sabarimala to be celebrated next week the unusual ‘bgm’ couldn’t have come more timely.
