ICC World Cup 2015: Five Indian bowlers whose performance stands out

Posted January 27th, 2015, 04:53 PM IST
Chetan Sharma (3/51 vs New Zealand, 1987): The medium pace bowler from Haryana recorded the first ever hat-trick in the World Cup. He removed Ken utherford, Ian Smith and Ewen Chatfield in Nagpur. Sharma’s magical deliveries found the stumps in all three occasions. However, after he set the trend, there have been six more hat-tricks with Sri Lanka speedster Lasith Malinga achieving the feat twice.

Mohinder Amarnath (3/12 vs West Indies, 1983): It was the World Cup final, there could not have been a better contest to win the Man of the Match award along with the trophy. Amarnath cleaned up the West Indies tail at Lord’s. His economy rate read 1.71. Isn’t that stupendous effort?

Ashish Nehra (6/23 vs England, 2003): The left-arm pacer ripped apart the English middle order at Kingsmead, Durban. The surprising part is that the bowler was nursing a swollen ankle for two days before he turned up for the match. All he did was maintain the line and length. Out of the six wickets, five were edged. Alec Stewart was the only one trapped leg-before.

Venkatesh Prasad (5/27 vs Pakistan, 1999): When it comes to Pakistan in World Cup, Prasad finds himself at his best. In 1996, he fell two short of a fifer but this time, he compensated. The lanky pacer broke the Pakistan middle order dismissing the in-form Saeed Anwar, followed by Inzamam-ul-Haq and Saleem Malik at Manchester.

Javagal Srinath (4/35 vs Sri Lanka, 2003): Defending a competitive total of 292, Srinath made the work easier removing the Sri Lankan openers Sanath Jayasuriya and Marvan Attapattu. He also picked up the wicket of the dangerous Aravinda de Silva.
