Chess player gets caught using smartphone in lavatory, expelled from tournament

Mumbai: Although not amusing, players getting thrown out of a sporting event is not a rare phenomenon. However, a chess grandmaster engineered his downfall after he was found using smartphone and taking pee breaks during a tournament in Dubai.

According to a report in Daily Mail, Gaioz Nigalidze is in danger of being banned for 15 years after it was emerged that he took toilet breaks to check the moves on his smartphone during the Dubai Open Chess tournament.

The organisers on Sunday took to their Facebook page to announce that Nigalidze is expelled from the tournament. They found out that he hid a mobile phone in toilet paper inside the cubicle.

Nigalidze’s opponent had initially registered a complaint with the organisers after he got suspicious about Nigalidze’s frequent toilet breaks.

However, this was not the first time when a player was banned from the tournament. According to the official statement released by Dubai Chess and Culture Club, organisers of the tournament, “In 2008, an Iranian player was also banned from the tournament after he was found to be receiving help from someone who was watching the game’s live broadcast on the internet and was sending the moves through text messages.”

“Tournaments sanctioned by the International Chess Federation, including the Dubai Open, do not allow players to carry with them mobile phones and other electronic devices during their games,” added the organisers," added the organisers.
