Woman dies after ENT surgery at Medical College Hospital

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Medical College Police on Sunday registered a case after a 24-year-old woman died of alleged medical negligence at Medical College Hospital. Relatives of Neethu, who hails from Jagathy in the city, said she underwent a surgery at the hospital on Saturday for complaints of a hole in eardrum and puss. She complained of stomach pain and irritation in the ear after the surgery.

The doctors who attended her told bystanders that the pain will subside soon but the woman fell unconscious and died by 9 pm. MCH officials on Sunday issued a statement saying the woman, mother of a boy child, had undergone a cardiac surgery at Sri Chitra Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology in 2002 and hence the ENT surgery on Saturday was held after a detailed eco test.

“The complex surgery lasted from 9 am to 12 pm and she was under observation till 3 pm,” the statement said. “Her condition was stable when she was checked by doctors at 6.30 pm. However, she complained of stomach ache at 7.45pm and was admitted to intensive care unit where she passed away.” The autopsy was held in the presence of the revenue divisional office and the result is awaited. The police registered a case after relatives protested saying medical negligence caused her death.
