Hyderabad: Unable to bear the alleged dowry harassment of her husband, a 33-year-old techie committed suicide at Chandanagar on Saturday night.
Malli Vemulapalli Vineela, hailing from Nellore district, hanged herself in the family’s flat when her husband and daughter were away.
Police registered a dowry death case against husband Vikram Jayasimha. Vineela and Vikram got married in November 2010 and were living at Gangaram. The couple has two daughters — one a five-year-old and the other a two-year-old.
Vineela was working as a software engineer for DST IT Services, while Vikram worked as a share market consultant.
“Vineela was earning well but Vikram had only a meagre income. This often led to arguments between the two. Vikram also started harassing Vineela for dowry,” her parents said.
The elder daughter was staying with parents, while the younger one was with Vineela’s parents in Nellore district. On Saturday at around 8.30 pm, Vikram and the elder daughter went to BHEL for purchasing snacks. When they returned, they found the door open and the bedroom door closed. Vikram called Vineela, but there was no response.
Suspecting suicide, he called his neighbours and the apartment watchman. With their help, he tried to break open the door, but failed.
Later, they hit the bedroom door with a full LPG cylinder and opened it. “When they entered the room, they found her hanging. They rushed her to a hospital, where she was declared dead,” Miyapur ACP S Ravikumar said.
Vineela’s family alleged that as the couple had two daughters Vikram harassed her for money. “Though we met all demands during the wedding, he was harassing her physically and mentally for more dowry,” her mother said.
Receiving a complaint from Vineela’s mother Udayalakshmi, police registered a dowry death (304 IPC) case and handed over the body to the parents. Vikram has been detained for questioning.
