Security up after intelligence warns of hijack threat

New Delhi/Chennai: Security around the country’s airports was stepped up and all anti-hijacking measures put in place after intelligence agencies warned of a possible hijack attempt. “Security around all the airports have been strengthened and we have taken all the measures that are required in the wake of the alert from intelligence agencies,” official sources said here on Sunday.

Two ‘terror’ calls from a woman kept the CISF squad responsible for the security at airport on their toes from Saturday midnight to Sunday afternoon after the caller told the CISF Delhi control room that ‘explosions will take place in Chennai and Hyderabad airports and many Air India flights were set to be hijacked on Sunday’.

Though the calls received at the control room were found to be hoax after the CISF conducted intensive searches in the two airports. The first call landed on Saturday midnight and the second call, from a mobile phone, at around 8.30 am Sunday.

During the second call, the woman told the CISF control room in English not to ignore the call the way ‘it happened in Chennai airport in the year 1984 when a bomb exploded despite a warning’. Airport sources said that the second call originated from Delhi and security agencies had traced the call to a 74-year-old woman named Asha Sharma there.
