Hyderabad: Fake registration plates on rise to avoid challans

Hyderabad: On Wednesday, a four-wheeler with a fake registration number was caught at Banjara hills. Reportedly the four-wheeler was used for film shooting purposes. To get away from challans and penalty points, a few vehicles drivers have been caught using fake registration numbers. Around 671 such cases with fake registration numbers were reported this year to the Hyderabad Traffic police. Vehicles are being traced fairly easily as there are two vehicles with the same vehicle number. Applications and requests are also being received from the victims as they are receiving multiple challans for traffic violations that they have not committed.

A victim who owns a two wheeler with vehicle number-AP11AC 4991 received four e-challans for signal jumping and not wearing a helmet. He claims that he had never jumped a signal nor had he been nabbed for not wearing a helmet. In fact, he had not been issued a single challan. And yet, he had received several challans from the traffic department. All these challans were issued to the second vehicle that had the same but fake registration number. So every time the second vehicle driver violated a traffic rule, the first vehicle driver was delivered a challan because both the vehicle numbers were the same and the number was registered in the first vehicle owner's name.

Syed Husam Uddin a resident of Riyasatnagar who got multiple wrong challans said, “I got four challans, among which two are for signal jumping and two for not wearing a helmet. When the traffic cops took pictures while booking the challans, it was clearly seen that it was another vehicle with the same vehicle number that was issued the challans.”

Panduranga Naik, Transport Joint Commissioner Hyderabad said, “If anybody feels that their vehicle number is being used illegally by some other vehicle as well, then people should approach us immediately so that we can take strict action against those who are illegally using other vehicle numbers to avoid challans and penalty points.”
