Vegetable prices set to fall due to increase in supply

Hyderabad: Residents, who are staying away from purchasing vegetables due to high prices, can start buying them from next week as more produce will arrive in the market.

Due to the supply crunch, the prices of tomato reached Rs 100 per kg and other vegetables too followed the suit.

K. Sumalatha, a woman farmer from Chevella, who sells her crop at the Rythu bazaar in city, said that due to the recent rains, groundwater at rural areas in Ranga Reddy district is sufficient and more crops will be ready in one week. “We are expecting a 20 per cent hike tomatoes in the coming week,” she said.

U. Praveen, a farmer from Yenkapally in Rangareddy district, said that tomato cultivation is sound in Moinabad, Navabpet, Shankarpally and Vikarabad mandals.

“We are worried about the fall in prices due to heavy arrivals next week. We are expecting the price in the range of Rs 15 per kg in the wholesale market. If the wholesale price dips to one digit, we will face loses,” he said.
