Hyderabad: Ramavath Lakpathi Nayak, 45, a constable attached to the elite Octopus wing, breathed his last on Sunday. Ramavath had sustained severe injuries during a mock drill on Tuesday. Ramavath was working with the Octopus wing since 2009.
Sources from Kamineni Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment, stated that he was admitted to hospital with severe heart injuries. His family members blamed the department for using an old car for the mock drill.
As a part of the mock drill, one team was speeding in a car as terrorists, while another team was chasing them in a mini bus. When they reached Aerocity on Adibatla-Tukkuguda stretch, the bus overtook the car. Lakpathi Nayak who was on the wheel applied a sudden brake. However, the vehicle did not stop and crashed into the bus.
“Had there been enough safety measures, the accident could have been avoided,” a relative said. The deceased was expecting a promotion next month. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter
S.Malla Reddy, ACP Ibrahimpatnam, said, “The case is under investigation. His body was handed over to the family after an autopsy at the Ibrahimpatnam Government Hospital.”
The hospital sources said that his two heart valves and ribs were fractured in the mishap. “The heart valves were replaced through a major surgery, after which he showed signs of recovery. However, he breathed his last at on Sunday,” sources said. Lakpathi Nayak hails from Peddavoora in Nalgonda district and joined the police around two decades ago.
