Police stop child marriage in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The police stopped a child marriage in the old city and rescued a 14-year- old girl from Thanaji Nagar on Monday evening.

The girl’s father K. Srinivas went absconding after police intervention, while his first wife was counselled by the police for trying to conduct the marriage.

The girl’s marriage was arranged with a 21-year-old man from Budvel on the 12th of this month and all preparations were on in full swing,

“The girl is a Class 9 student. As soon as we got a tip off we intervened and stopped the wedding preparations. We took the help of Prajwala staff to counsel the family,” said inspector N. Lakshminarayana.

Police said that Srinivas, who is a cook, has three wives, and has one daughter and three sons in the first wife. So, he wanted to marry off the girl as soon as possible.
