Telangana Congress steps up campaign

ADILABAD: With general elections less than a year away, the Congress has stepped up its campaign that it is the party that carved out Telangana state with the blessing of the then party president Sonia Gandhi.
Congress leaders celebrated Telangana Formation Day on a grand scale this year with special focus on reminding people that it was the party that carved Telangana state.
During the public meetings and the party’s Jana Chaitanya Yatra, Congress leaders have been reminding the people of their vow that they would be indebted to the party for creating the new state and appealing to them to elect Congress candidates in the 2019 elections as thanksgiving to Mrs Gandhi.
All India Congress Committee member Gandrath Sujatha said that people were now realising that the claims of the TRS that it was instrumental in creating Telangana were false. “People are now realising the fact,” Ms Sujatha said, adding that people now understand the real contribution of the Congress in Telangana state.
Ms Sujatha performed Palabhishekam to Mrs Gandhi’s portrait and praised her while celebrating Telangana Formation Day in Adilabad town on June 2.
The top leadership of the party is of the opinion that the state Congress leaders have failed to derive proper mileage out of creation of Telangana state in 2014.
While the Congress was wiped out in residuary Andhra Pradesh after bifurcation, it got little in the way of election victory in Telangana.
The Congress was of the opinion that TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao would merge his party into the Congress in gratitude for granting statehood to Telangana, but instead, the TRS went on to form the government in the new state, and later, encouraged defections.
