Karimnagar: Those aspiring for party tickets and those named as contestants from major political parties are collecting affidavits filed by their opponents and comparing them to affidavits the same persons filed in the previous election.

This exercise is aimed at exposing the disproportionate assets and wealth of the candidates.





Recently, Nizamabad MP K. Kavitha questioned former Jagtial MLA T. Jeevan Reddy of the Congress about the huge difference in the properties he owned and their value shown in the affidavits submitted in 2009 and 2014.

She said she would lodge a complaint with the Election Commission on the differing assets shown in Jeevan Reddy’s affidavits.

Ms Kavitha's opponents have hit back by sharing posts countering her claim that she had no house of her own and was staying in a rented house. Her opponents shared photographs of houses which claimed as belonging to Ms Kavitha on social networking.

The affidavits are also being used by ticket aspirants to defame their rivals or to reduce their chances of getting a ticket. Contesting candidates thus have to take extra care when furnishing details in their affidavits, unlike in the past.

Many contesting candidates have shown some growth in the value of their properties in their affidavits submitted in 2009 and 2014 in the old Adilabad district.

Generally, the candidates take the help of experts like senior advocates in filing the affidavits.
