Tiruchy: Man held for sexually harassing minor girl

Tiruchy: Tension prevailed near Thillai Nagar police station here for a while on Friday, following a group of Muslims of Alwarthope area staging a demonstration to condemn an AIADMK functionary's alleged misbehaviour with a seven-year-old girl student of state-aided Quid-e-Milleth school.

Police said, the AIADMK functionary Saleem who also holds charge as secretary of the school, was sexually harassing the class two girl daily.

The girl informed the matter to her parents yesterday.

Following this, parents and the relatives of the girl went to the school and questioned Saleem about his misbehaviour with the girl. A heated argument ensued and at one stage, people severely beat up Saleem.

On information, Thillai Nagar police went to the spot and secured Saleem. Meanwhile, former Tiruchy corporation councilor Mustafa came to the police station to meet Saleem. The agitated public raised slogans against Mustafa and demanded that police take action against Saleem.

Police persuaded the agitators to disperse peacefully with an assurance that they will take suitable action against Saleem and restored normalcy.

Meanwhile, Srirangam All women police arrested Saleem and filed a case against him under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, police sources said. He was later remanded to judicial custody in the evening.
