Hyderabad: On voting eve, Rs 75 lakh seized in police raids

Hyderabad: Nearly Rs 75 lakh was seized by the Rachakonda police throughout the day in random checking of vehicles on Thursday, just a day before Friday’s elections to the state Assembly.
In the biggest haul of the day, Task Force officials apprehended a person named Balaji who was transporting Rs 50 lakh in cash allegedly to distribute to voters to buy their support for Secunderabad Cantonment Congress candidate and former Union minister Sarve Satyanarayana.
The Task Force intercepted Balaji’s car at Nampally during routine vehicle checking. He was reportedly transporting the cash from a hawala dealer named Dileep to his handlers. He did not have any documents to support the large amount of money he was carrying, police sources said.
The police seized the Rs 50 lakh cash and the vehicle and handed them over along with Balaji to the authorities for further investigation and follow-up action.
In the Rachakonda commissionerate, the Uppal police seized Rs 19 lakh in cash from a person named Ranjith Reddy who works as an ATM loader employed with a cash loading company, at Uppal crossroads at about 7 pm on Thursday.
According to Uppal inspector P. Venkat-eswarlu, the police was checking vehicles on Ramanthapur main road when they stopped a car (AP09 TV 5197). The vehicle reportedly belonged to the State Bank Begumpet branch staff.
Mr Venkateswarlu said, “They were carrying Rs 19 lakh without supporting documents. We immediately took him into custody.”
Also on Thursday, the Chilkalguda police seized Rs 4 lakh in cash from a person named K. Sunil.
The 21-year-old accused was said to be a car driver. Police was acting on information that he was carrying the money. He did not have any papers for the cash.
Chilkalguda inspector Bala Gangi Reddy said, “Police intercepted a vehicle and recovered eight bundles of Rs 500 denomination notes. Each bundle had 100 notes totalling Rs 4 lakh.”
