Human emotion-reading sensor made

Visakhapatnam: A Vizag-based researcher in computer sciences developed new bio-sensors to understand human emotions of a disabled person by using electroencepha-lography (EEG) signals of the human brain.

Murali Krishna Namana, who is researching thought technology, said the emotions generated from a normal active person can be easily interpreted. But in case of a disabled person, identifying emotions through speech is difficult.

“If a disabled person is immobilised and undergoing treatment, this technology can be used to gauge his or her reactions. If the brain signals are interpreted as happy while the patient is being administered a drug, we know that he or she is responding to the treatment. In order to interact with the emotions of immobilised persons, it is necessary to evaluate the brain signals effectively,” said Mr Krishna. He is going to apply for a patent.

Until now, EEG was used to understand the physical functioning of the brain through its signals. The new system deals with the emotional and psychological aspects of the human brain, added the 34-year-old researcher.

It took Mr Krishna and his colleagues three years to develop and successfully test the sensors. He is hoping to develop it further and replace narco-analysis, which is used in criminal investigations.
