KOCHI: Metro Rail construction works have got an impetus after the uncertainties over the acquisition of the remaining plots and widening of Vyttila Petta Roads has been resolved.

According to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) authorities, civil works are progressing at a fast pace on the 18 km stretch between Aluva and Maharajas College Ground.

“In the first reach from Aluva to Kalamassery, 1482 piles have been completed along with 211 piers, 215 pier caps and 76 U-girders.

In the second reach from Kalamassery to Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, 1372 piles, 228 piers, 112 pier caps and 96 U-girders are ready.

Viaduct construction works are progressing in a satisfactory manner while station construction is yet to pick up.

Construction of stations and parking space at Edappally, Changampuzha Park, Kaloor, Lisie and MG Road has been hit due to the delay in handing over land,” said sources at DMRC.

Meanwhile, after the initial hiccups, land acquisition for the project is in the final stage with more than 95 per cent of the land acquisition completed.

Of the 42 acres needed for the station and viaduct construction, only three acres of plots have to be taken over now.

The Kochi Metro Rail Limited authorities have instructed the Revenue Department to initiate forcible acquisition of plots from those owners who are reluctant to surrender land.

The KMRL’s decision to begin works on the Vyttila-Pettah stretch will also give a push to the progress of works in the fourth reach.
