Hyderabad: The spurt of unplanned growth around the IT hub of the city for the last couple of years has left over 3 lakh professionals residing around the hub gasping for basic amenities like roads and drainage and garbage dumping facilities.

Localities like APPA Junction, Gachibowli, Gandipet, Gopanpalli, Hitec City, Hydernagar, Hyderguda, Kondapur, Khajaguda, Kokapet, Kismatpur, Kukatpally, Madhapur, Miyapur, Nanakramguda, Narsingi and Tellapur have emerged as the major residential hubs surrounding the IT corridor and are interspersed with bad roads and overflowing drains.

Officials, meanwhile, say that these roads will have to wait for being re-carpeted till the laying of water pipelines and underground cables is completed and the monsoons are over.

Sriramnagar Colony in Manikonda and Raghavendra Society, Kondapur stand out as examples of unplanned growth with a high-tension electricity tower in the middle of the main road. Also, in several parts of Manikonda village, garbage dumped at street corners is a common site. Broken and stretches of completely eroded roads can be seen on the DPS stretch towards ORR, and in Raidurg, Manikonda and Durgam Cheruvu areas.

“This road has been full of potholes since the last three years and with the amount of construction activity and heavy machinery, one side of the road is not usable. Authorities have not constructed the road so far despite the prescence of over 10000 houses in the area,” said Prakash Rai, a resident from Madhavapuri Hills in Chandanagar.

“The major problems are drainage and the roads becoming unusable during the rains,” said M. Sandeep Kumar, president of (Telangana IT Association). “The major roads in and around the IT corridor belong to both GHMC and the R&B (Roads and Buildings). These were recarpeted during the recent Metropolis Week. Currently we are assessing how many roads can be re-carpeted ,” said GHMC West Zone commissioner, P.S. Pradyumna.
